As at end of June 2024, some 692,798 vehicles were registered at the National Land Transport Authority, compared to 676,441 as at end of December 2023, i.e.an increase of 16,357(+2.4%).
Some 16,357 vehicles joined the fleet, whilst 2,793 were put out of circulation during the first semester. The fleet consisted mostly of cars, double cab pickups and dual-purpose vehicles 383,895 (55.4%) and auto/motor cycles 245,986 (35.5%). The remaining 62,917 (9.1%) comprised vans, lorries and trucks, buses and other vehicles.
The number of road accidents registered during the first semester of 2024 was 19,155, that is, 12.4% higher than the figure of 17,038 for the first semester of 2023.
During the first semester of 2024 the number of road traffic accidents causing casualties (fatalities and persons injured as a result of road accidents) decreased by 11.6% to 1,118 compared to 1,264 in the corresponding period of 2023. Amongst 64 were fatal compared to 70 during January to June 2023. Non-injury accidents increased by 14.3% to 18,037, against 15,774 for the corresponding period of 2023.
The number of persons who died as a result of road accidents during the first semester of 2024 was 69 as compared to 71 during the corresponding period of 2023.
Among the casualties, the most vulnerable category of road users were riders/pillion riders of motorized two wheelers (33), followed by pedestrians (12).
