[Document] Labour force, Employment and Unemployment for 1st Quarter 2024

Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 558,600 in the first quarter of 2024 compared to 559,700 in the fourth quarter of 2023 and 551,800 in the first quarter of 2023.

The unemployment rate for the first quarter of 2024 is estimated at 6.3%, compared to the rate of 6.1% at the fourth quarter of 2023 and the rate of 6.7% at the first quarter of 2023.

The number of persons considered to be outside the labour force is estimated at 420,400 in the first quarter of 2024 compared to 419,200 in the fourth quarter of 2023 and 422,900 in the first quarter of 2023.

The main characteristics of the unemployed at the first quarter of 2024 were:

​(i) ​The 37,300 unemployed comprised 15,200 males (41%) and 22,100 females (59%).
​(ii) ​Around 20,900 (56%) of the unemployed were single; males (75%) and females (43%). ​
(iii) ​Some 16,600 (45%) of the unemployed did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent and among them 3,200 had not even passed the Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC)/Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) or equivalent. ​
(iv) ​Around 30,000 (80%) had been looking for work for up to one year. ​
(v) ​Some 9,300 (25%) were looking for a job for the first time.
​(vi) ​Around 14,800 (40%) were registered at the Employment Information Centre.
​(vii) ​Some 4,400 or 12% of the unemployed were heads of households.
​(viii) ​Around 5,200 (14%) lived in households with no employed persons. ​
(ix) ​Some 13,400 or about 36% of the unemployed were aged between 16 to 24 years.
​(x​) ​There were 5,800 (16%) young persons aged 16 to 24 years, not yet married and looking for a first job. Some 2,000 possessed a qualification below SC.
