[Document] Population and Vital Statistics for January to June 2024

As at 1 July 2024, the population of the Republic of Mauritius stood at 1,259,509, with a decrease of 1,532 (-0.12%) over the population as at 1 July 2023.

Islandwise, the population as at 1 July 2024 was as follows:

Island of Mauritius : 1,213,974
Island of Rodrigues :45,261
Agalega and St Brandon : 274

The number of live births registered during the first semester of 2024 was 6,268, compared to 6,508 registered during the first semester of 2023. Some 12,290 live births are expected for the year 2024, leading to a crude birth rate of 9.8 per 1,000 mid-year population, against 10.2 the preceding year.

Some 6,213 deaths were registered during the first six months of 2024, compared to 5,738 for the corresponding period in 2023. Around 12,780 deaths are expected for the year 2024, resulting in a crude death rate of 10.1 per 1,000 mid-year population, compared to 9.4 in 2023.

Infant deaths registered during the first six months of 2024 was 93, against 90 for the corresponding period in 2023. Around 175 infant deaths are expected for the year 2024, resulting in an infant mortality rate of 14.2 per 1,000 live births, against 13.1 in 2023.

The number of still births registered during the first semester of 2024 was 47, compared to 56 for the corresponding period in 2023. Around 90 still births are expected during the year 2024, resulting in a still birth rate of 7.3 per 1,000 total births, compared to 8.0 in 2023.

e number of marriages registered in the first semester of 2024 was 3,745, i.e. 8.7% lower than the figure of 4,101 for the corresponding period in 2023. Around 7,880 marriages are expected for the year 2024. The crude marriage rate works out to 12.5 per 1,000 mid-year population in 2024, against 13.7 in 2023.
