In 2023, solid waste landfilled at Mare Chicose weighed 541,141 tonnes, 9.5% higher than in 2022 (494,073 tonnes).

Between 2022 and 2023, the harvested area under cultivation of sugarcane decreased by 8.5% from 39,199 hectares to 35,863 hectares; tea plantation decreased from 659 hectares in 2022 to 627 hectares in 2023; and food crops increased by 17.3% from 7,865 hectares to 9,222 hectares.

In 2023, the Island of Mauritius received 4,742 million cubic metres of water rainfall, 15.5% higher when compared to 4,105 million cubic metres in 2022.

Total water utilisation was estimated at 956 million cubic metres in 2023. Hydropower accounted for 35%, the domestic, industrial and tourism sector for 34% and the remaining 31% was used by the agricultural sector.

Complaints attended by the Pollution Prevention and Control Division of the Ministry of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change decreased by 42.4% from 757 in 2022 to 436 in 2023.

The complaints were mainly due to: noise (17%), bare land (15%) and air pollution (10%).
