ASEAN Day and Indonesian Anniversary celebrated

Mauritius joined the global community in commemorating two significant milestones on August 4, 2024. The event, held at Hua Lien Club Mauritius, celebrated both the 57th Anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the 79th Anniversary of Indonesia.

ASEAN Day, observed annually on August 8th, marks the establishment of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in 1967. This regional intergovernmental organisation promotes cooperation and integration among its ten member states. The day serves as a platform to highlight ASEAN’s achievements and its commitment to regional solidarity.

The gathering in Mauritius brought together the ASEAN community in Mauritius along with dignitaries, including Dr. Salman Al-Farisi, Secretary General of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA); H.E. Ms. Noralyn Baja, Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to Mauritius; Mr. Lanang Seputro, Permanent Chargé d’Affaires of the Republic of Indonesia to Mauritius; Mr. Paisit Boonparlit, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Kingdom of Thailand to Mauritius; and Mr. Saleem Beebeejaun, Honorary Consul of Malaysia to Mauritius.

The event served as a platform to highlight ASEAN’s role in fostering regional cooperation, economic growth, and cultural exchange. Indonesia’s contributions to the region were also acknowledged, emphasising the country’s leadership and influence.

Johann Dy, founder of the ASEAN Community in Mauritius, expressed his enthusiasm for the occasion:

« Today’s celebration is a testament to the growing ASEAN community in Mauritius. We’ve successfully brought together individuals from different ASEAN member states to foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie. This is the second year of our ASEAN Day celebration, and we’re thrilled to witness a doubled turnout compared to the previous year. The presence of ambassadors from the Philippines, Thailand, and Indonesia is a significant milestone for us. It underscores the importance of ASEAN in Mauritius and our commitment to strengthening ties with the region. »

The event underscored Mauritius’ commitment to fostering closer relations with ASEAN member states and exploring opportunities for collaboration in various fields.
