Labour Force, Employment and Unemployment for 2nd Quarter 2024

Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 556,700 in the second quarter of 2024 compared to 558,600 in the first quarter of 2024 and 553,200 in the second quarter of 2023.

The unemployment rate for the second quarter of 2024 is estimated at 6.2%, compared to the rate of 6.3% at the first quarter of 2024 and the rate of 6.4% at the second quarter of 2023.

The number of persons considered to be outside the labour force is estimated at 424,500 in the second quarter of 2024 compared to 420,400 in the first quarter of 2024 and 424,400 in the second quarter of 2023.​

The main characteristics of the unemployed at the second quarter of 2024 were:​

​​(i)​​The 36,500 unemployed comprised 14,800 males (41%) and 21,700 females (59%).
​(ii)​Around 20,600 (56%) of the unemployed were single; males (84%) and females (38%).
​(iii)​Some 17,500 (48%) of the unemployed did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent and among them 2,100 had not even passed the Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC)/Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) or equivalent.
​(iv)​Around 29,100 (80%) had been looking for work for up to one year.
​(v)​Some 10,000 (27%) were looking for a job for the first time.
​(vi)​Around 16,900 (46%) were registered at the Employment Information Centre.
​(vii)​Some 4,400 or 12% of the unemployed were heads of households.
​(viii)​Around 6,000 (16%) lived in households with no employed persons.
​(ix)​​Some 12,700 or about 35% of the unemployed were aged between 16 to 24 years.
​(x)​​There were 5,800 (16%) young persons aged 16 to 24 years, not yet married and looking for a first job. Some 2,500 possessed a qualification below SC.
