At the end of December 2018, there were 556,001 vehicles registered at the National Transport Authority (+4.6%) compared to 531,797 at the end of December 2017.
During 2018, some 29,682 vehicles were registered whilst 5,478 were put out of circulation.
In 2018, a total of 29,075 road accidents were reported against 29,627 in 2017, showing a decrease of 1.9%.
A total of 57,104 vehicles were involved in road traffic accidents during 2018 against 58,364 in 2017, i.e. a decrease of 2.2%.
The number of casualties registered in 2018 was 3,718 compared to 4,209 in the preceding year, down by 11.7%. Among the casualties, around 39.3% were riders of auto/motor cycles, 25.9% passengers, 15.5% drivers, 15.3% pedestrians and 4% pedal cyclists.
Compared to 2017, the number of fatal accidents reported during 2018 went down by 13.2% (from 152 to 132) and the number of persons who died as a result of road accidents decreased by 8.9% (from 157 to 143).
