Polytechnics Mauritius

Following visit of La Trobe University officials to Polytechnics Mauritius Limited – tertiary entity operating under the aegis of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources, Tertiary Education and Scientific Research – in July 2018, the links with La Trobe University strengthened to culminate into the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding ( MoU) between both Polytechnics Mauritius Limited and La Trobe University in December 2018 during the visit of the Chief Executive Officer, Mr Yamal Matabudul, to La Trobe University.

The MoU aims at opening up an articulation for the Polytechnics Mauritius Limited’s students to degree programmes offered by La Trobe University.
During the period January 2019 to May 2019, there have been constructive discussions via Skype and also periodic visits of La Trobe University officials to further develop the collaboration. This now culminates with the visit of high officials of La Trobe University to Polytechnics Mauritius Limited from 3 to 5 July 2019.

From 3 to 5 July 2019, a series of activities have been organized by Polytechnics Mauritius Ltd – operating under the aegis of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources, Tertiary Education and Scientific Research – in the context of the visit of a delegation from La Trobe University, (School of Nursing and Midwifery) Australia to Mauritius.

The activities include two workshops, High-Level Strategic meetings between representatives of La Trobe University and the management of Polytechnics Mauritius Ltd and most importantly the launching of the Bachelor of Nursing (Top-Up).

In line with its mission to inspire students, nurture a broad mindset and carve out professionals that lead and transform industry, fostering growth, harmony and sustainability in Mauritius and beyond, Polytechnics Mauritius Ltd, with the collaboration of La Trobe University aims propelling its services to a higher level. Hence the introduction of the Bachelor of Nursing (Top-Up). While raising some challenges for the students, the Bachelor of Nursing course will allow them to provide individual nursing care within a variety of healthcare contexts and contribute towards the development of new nursing knowledge.

Upon completion of the course, it is expected that the Bachelor of Nursing graduates will, amongst others, be able to demonstrate principles and practices of management and leadership including supervising, leading, managing, teaching and delegating to others, Demonstrate productive, inter-professional team capabilities, provide quality care for clients within a variety of healthcare contexts and locations, Develop self-motivated lifelong learning capabilities and evaluate the impact of their care, advocate for the patients in their care, identify strategies for changing healthcare services to meet societal needs and even critically analyze contemporary healthcare services and provide feasible alternatives.

The objective behind the visit of La Trobe University

The School of Nursing and Midwifery at La Trobe University is the oldest tertiary nursing school in Australia and offers education programs including undergraduate, postgraduate, research higher degrees and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programs in nursing and nursing specializations.

The Bachelor of Nursing (Top Up) course by La Trobe University, ranked Top 100 in 2018 by QS World University Rankings, is a progression route for in-service Nurses holding a Diploma in Nursing in a part time fashion. Learning methodology at Polytechnics Mauritius Limited

At Polytechnics Mauritius, the learning style revolves around the 4 Ps’ which are Practice- based immersion, Portfolio, Project based learning and Peer to Peer learning.

Practice based immersion ensures the student to have industry exposure through visits, shadow programs, speaker series, internships and placement. This phase enables the student to imbibe the industry component in his/her overall learning journey.

Industry experience does not stand alone. It needs to be coupled with project based learning whereby the student takes the knowledge and skills acquired in the industry to replicate in the classroom as projects, presentation and assignments.
