At 10h00, Thursday 02 March, the remnant of Freddy has emerged into the Mozambique Channel. Most weather models are showing that Freddy will intensify slightly and move towards the southeast over the weekend. On this scenario, the centre of Freddy will be off the Southeast coast of Madagascar at the beginning of next week.

The evolution of Freddy in the Mozambique Channel, the advection of warm moist air from the equatorial region and the easterly airstream from an anticyclone to the south of the Madagascar is favouring the development of active convective clouds to the south of the Mascarene region. These active clouds are likely to cross Mauritius and Rodrigues as from Saturday 05 afternoon and cause a showery and thundery weather on Saturday evening and on Sunday.

Weather Forecast for Mauritius valid from Friday 03 to Monday 06 March 2023

Friday 03: Afternoon localised showers expected to the south, the East and over the Centre with thunderstorms.

Saturday 04, Sunday 05: cloudy as from Saturday afternoon with scattered thundery showers. The showers are likely to become widespread and heavy in the evening and on Sunday with thunderstorms. The short duration and high intensity showers are likely to cause water accumulation and flooding in certain places.

Monday 06: Residual instabilities will cause the weather to remain cloudy throughout the day with a few scattered showers, mainly over the high grounds.

Precautions:

In case of heavy thundery showers, it is advised to:

1. Remain in safe places and avoid open areas, hiking, sea ventures and sheltering under trees.

2. Avoid flood prone areas.

3. Be very cautious on the roads due to reduced visibility resulting from heavy rains and fog patches.

Weather Forecast for Rodrigues valid from Friday 03 to Monday 06 March 2023

Friday 03, Saturday 04: Partly cloudy becoming cloudy on Saturday evening with scattered showers.

Sunday 05 and Monday 06: Cloudy to overcast with scattered thundery showers. The showers are likely to become heavy at times causing localised water accumulation. This may lead rivulets to flood and “radiers” to inundate.

Precautions:

In case of heavy thundery showers, it is advised to:

1. Remain in safe places and avoid open areas, hiking, sea ventures and sheltering under trees.

2. Avoid “radiers” that may flood and avoid areas prone to water accumulations

3. Be very cautious on the roads due to reduced visibility resulting from heavy rains and fog patches.
