Weather Outlook for Mauritius and Rodrigues

Freddy has intensified into a moderate tropical strom and, at 10h00 this morning, it was still evolving in the Mozambique Channel. Most weather models are showing that Freddy will remain in the Mozambique Channel during this weekend. On this scenario, its centre will be off the Southwest coast of Madagascar at the beginning of next week.

The evolution of Freddy in the Mozambique Channel is causing the advection of warm moist air, from the equatorial region, over the Mascarenes. The interaction of this equatorial airstream with the easterly airstream, associated with an anticyclone to the south of Madagascar, is favouring the development of active convective clouds to the south of the Mascarene Islands.

These active clouds are likely to cross Mauritius as from tonight and Rodrigues as from tomorrow, causing a showery and thundery weather till Monday 06.

Weather Forecast for Mauritius valid for Sunday 05 and Monday 06 March 2023

Sunday 05: Cloudy to overcast with widespread showers with thunderstorms. Short duration heavy showers are likely to cause water accumulation and flooding in certain places.

Monday 06: Weather will be partly cloudy to cloudy with few passing showers mainly to the East, South and central plateau.

Precautions:

In case of heavy thundery showers, it is advised to:

1. Remain in safe places and avoid open areas, hiking, sea ventures and sheltering under trees.

2. Avoid flood prone areas.

3. Be very cautious on the roads due to reduced visibility resulting from heavy rains and fog patches.

Weather Forecast for Rodrigues valid from Sunday 05 to Monday 06 March 2023

Sunday 05: Gradually cloudy in the morning with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. As from the afternoon, the showers will become widespread, moderate to heavy at times with thunderstorms. This may lead rivulets to flood

and “radiers” to inundate.

Monday 06: Cloudy to overcast with widespread showers, moderate to heavy at times with thunderstorms.

In case of heavy thundery showers, it is advised to:

1. Remain in safe places and avoid open areas, hiking, sea ventures and sheltering under trees.

2. Avoid “radiers” that may flood and avoid areas prone to water accumulations

3. Be very cautious on the roads due to reduced visibility resulting from heavy rains and fog patches.
