Gateway Real Estate Africa (GREA) successfully completed Artemis Curepipe Hospital and handed it over to its client, Falcon Healthcare Group in May this year. Developed at the cost of US$ 20 million, this project shows GREA’s intent to deliver impactful developments and be the conduit for healthcare investment in the country. The project has seen the creation of over 400 jobs and onboarded several local suppliers throughout the construction phases which has ultimately benefited to the local economy.

Set to begin operations in June 2023, the Artemis Hospital with a Gross Building Area of 8,879m2 will offer a full range of health services.

This successful delivery has been done under the oversight of Nilma Dhooky, GREA’s Development Manager and Client representative of the Artemis Curepipe Hospital. The proud Mauritian Engineer commented on her role and responsibility on this project:

“In an industry that’s still overwhelmingly male dominated, I am proud to be an example to other females of what can be achieved through guts, resilience, initiative and tenacity.

The successful delivery of Artemis Curepipe Hospital fills me with immense pride, as we bring quality healthcare to Mauritius and the region, in addition to creating 400 jobs during the construction phase and 250 once operational.”

As a female engineer, Nilma Dhooky is in her natural element when she is on site and admits that being given the key responsibility on such an important project has elevated her.

“Site work is what I enjoy the most. The construction site is really my playground. As a woman, my inspiration has been other female trailblazers within our organization. I have been entrusted a responsibility that has taken my skill set and self-confidence to new heights.

I have had to juggle between feasibility, financial and legal aspects, sustain the presence on the site to interact with the teams and coping with site challenges which are never the same as those one would encounter on another site as no two constructions are the same. I am forever indebted to the untiring support of the GREA team and the wonderful work of all the consultants and contractors involved on this development.”

Nilma Dhooky is an Electrical Engineer and MEP (mechanical, electrical & plumbing) team leader with more than 15 years’ experience in the Building MEP Engineering Sector. She joined Gateway Real Estate Africa in February 2020, providing design and development management within the development team. Nilma forms part of a Development Team that comprises 90% of females who all work on big impact real estate projects in Mauritius and Africa.

Prior to joining Gateway Real Estate Africa, Nilma has evolved as an MEP Consulting Engineer. Her responsibilities included client liaison, engagement with various regulatory authorities to obtain clearances, budget preparation and updating, design calculations, specification write-ups, producing tender documents and drawings, the management of the design team comprising other design engineers and draughtsmen and site follow-up.

Her areas of expertise include design, cost management, construction, commissioning and operation of electrical equipment across a wide range of building services projects in Mauritius and in the Indian Ocean Region. Having gained management experience throughout her working career, Nilma employs a participative, team-based philosophy to optimise output and results.

Nilma is a Chartered Engineer under the Engineering Council UK, a member of The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and a member of the Council of Registered Professional Engineers of Mauritius.

It should also be noted that GREA is currently developing a specialized Oncology hospital in Coromandel. The emergence of these new real estate sub-sectors provides an ideal opportunity for economies such as Mauritius to diversify its mainly tourism dependent economy. The current development of world class specialist healthcare facilities on the island provides an ideal opportunity to position Mauritius as a regional medical hub, which can easily be combined with medical tourism.
