Cabinet has agreed to the promulgation of the Information and Communication Technologies (Registration of SIM) (Amendment) Regulations 2023 so as to postpone the effective date of the Regulations to 30 June 2023 instead of 16 January 2023, and the deadline for registration of existing SIM cards from 31 July 2023 to 31 December 2023 in order to enable the operators to connect their system with all the stakeholders concerned at the same time.
Information and Communication Technologies (Registration of SIM) Regulations 2021 were promulgated in December 2021 to control the sale and use of Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards in line with the recommendations of the Report of the Commission of Inquiry on Drug Trafficking published in 2018.
