The Young African Leaders Initiative, commonly known as YALI, develops leadership and entrepreneurship skills and connects participants with their peers and with the American people. Established in 2010, YALI is managed and implemented by the Department of State and USAID.

YALI consists of the Mandela Washington Fellowship, which began in 2014 and is funded and managed by the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs; the online YALI Network created in 2013 and managed by the State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs; and four USAID Regional Leadership Centers established in 2015 in sub-Saharan Africa. As of 2022, YALI has nearly 5,800 Mandela Washington Fellowship alumni and more than 22,000 alumni from the USAID Regional Leadership Centers, in addition to 640,000 YALI Network members.

The 2022 – 2024 Committee for the YALI Mauritius Chapter took office in November 2022, with the mission of supporting YALI alumni in their initiatives and furthering the YALI mission. In light of the same, the new team seeks to “Engage for Impact through Youth Mobilization, Conversations, Empowerment, Capacity Building and Strengthened Collaborations”, which is the mission of the team.

The team consists of:
Kooshilla Saraye – Chapter Coordinator
Jeevesh Augnoo – Advocacy and Marketing Coordinator
Anoushka Mohit – Curriculum Coordinator
Roomila Roothoorodoo – Monitoring and Evaluation Coordinator
Sharuna Doyal – Networking and Events Coordinator
Kayamdy Humaira – Recruitment and Selection Coordinator
Lileshwaree Sreekeessoon – Sustainability Coordinator

Ms. Saraye emphasizes that

“in today’s ever-evolving world, it is imperative to keep up oneself updated, including knowledge, skills and core competencies. For the 2 years of our mandate, YALI Mauritius seeks to empower our young people for both personal and professional development, thus creating a movement of high impact young African leaders gathered for impact. »

Jeevesh, who has been active in youth and community development initiatives for the past ten years, encourages active young citizens and visionaries to look out for opportunities offered through the YALI initiatives, which are regularly made available on the YALI Mauritius Chapter social media channels, to benefit from a network of leaders from various backgrounds as well as explore opportunities to amplify their positive impact in the community.
