On the 14 February 2023, Intense Tropical Cyclone Freddy has moved into our region of responsibility from the Australian region.

At 10 h 00 on Friday 17 February 2023, Intense Tropical Cyclone Freddy was centred around latitude 15.5 degrees south and longitude 75.3 degrees east , that is at about 1,950 km east-north-east of Mauritius and 1350 km east-north-east of Rodrigues. It is moving westward at about 25 km/h

Along this trajectory, FREDDY is expected to approach our region and influence the weather at Rodrigues as from Sunday and Mauritius as from Monday.

Evolution of the weather systems for the next five days
Most numerical weather prediction models are in consensus that Freddy will have an intensity of tropical cyclone to intense tropical cyclone during the next five days. Also it is expected to move with a speed of about 25 km/h in a general westerly direction over the next two days and after the 19th February 2023, it will move in a west south westerly direction until the 21st February 2023.

It is forecast to pass at its closest distance of approximately 275 km to the north north west of Rodrigues during Sunday night. Thereafter, most models are in agreement that FREDDY is likely to pass at about 175 km to the north north west of Mauritius as a tropical cyclone during the night of Monday 20 February 2023.

The Mauritius Meteorological Services is keeping a close watch on the evolution of the intense tropical cyclone FREDDY.

NWP weather models are quite consistent regarding the intensity and displacement of the above system.
