On the 6th of March 2023, the Embassy of Japan in Mauritius and the Intercontinental Slavery Museum (ISM) signed the documents formalizing the allocation of a grant of 48,505 Euros, i.e., approximately 2 million rupees.

This was made possible through Japan’s official development assistance programme, Grant assistance for Cultural Grassroots Projects (GCGP).

The Grant will be allocated to the ISM for “The Project for Improvement in Accessibility of People with Disabilities and Elderly at the Intercontinental Slavery Museum”. This project will enable the ISM to acquire a lift and facilitate access for the disabled and the elderly to the three-storey building in which the museum is found.

The documents were signed by His Excellency Kawaguchi Shuichiro, Ambassador of Japan and Mr. Jean-Maxy Simonet, Chairperson of the ISM.
