The Human Resource Development Council (HRDC) in collaboration with the University of Mauritius (UoM) held a Closing Ceremony on Thursday 11 May 2023 to recognise the achievement of 18 working professionals who have completed the Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence (MSc AI) course.

The ceremony was held at the New Academic Complex, UoM, Réduit and was graced by Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun, Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, and Soodesh Satkam Callichurn, Minister of Labour, Human Resource Development and Training, Minister of Commerce and Consumer Protection.

The MSc AI course was fully funded by the HRDC under its ‘Skills Development Support Programme for Artificial Intelligence’. The course was designed to allow graduates to develop core data analysis skills and explore both traditional and state-of-the-art tools and techniques of AI and machine learning. The course also aimed to provide graduates with the fundamental knowledge and practical skills needed to design, build and apply AI systems for real-life applications through group and individual projects.

Dr. Raj Auckloo, Director – Human Resource Development Council:

“For us to fully realise the potential of Artificial Intelligence, we need a new generation of professionals who can take up the challenge of developing and implementing this transformative technology. We understand the role that the graduates can play in shaping the future of this field. The need for highly skilled AI professionals has never been greater, and the opportunities for those who have the necessary skills are huge. This programme was funded by the HRDC as we firmly believe that funding should not be a barrier to training, upskilling and skills development opportunities.”

Professor Sanjeev Kumar Sobhee, Vice-Chancellor, University of Mauritius:

“The UoM is committed to consolidating the triple helix model, that is academia-industry-public sector collaboration to train the workforce of the future. This programme in Artificial Intelligence is the perfect example of how we are translating this vision and commitment into concrete action.”

The MSc AI course was run for a period of two years, from November 2020 to January 2023, on a part-time basis. The 18 employees who completed the course are from 14 enterprises operating in diverse economic sectors. The course was centred on a project-based learning approach where the students had to identify a real problematic in their workplace and work on a project to address it. This approach was beneficial as it provided students with hands-on experience, allowing them to appply the knowledge and skills they have acquired throughout the programme in a practical setting.

The ceremony included a presentation by Group CEO of Rose Hill Transport Holdings Ltd, Dr. Sidharth Sharma on the theme ‘Pushing the organisational performance limits with AI.’

Mr Vidia Mooneegan, Global Head of Shared Services – Ceridian (Mauritius):

“Ceridian is a cloud software company at the forefront of innovation. We build products for a more intelligent future of work where AI and machine learning drive value through efficiency, immediacy and informed decision-making. Our partnership with both UoM and HRDC over the years has benefited our organisation. Through the MSc AI course with UoM/HRDC, our people are better equipped to work on our products such as our Dayforce Talent Intelligence platform which is an end-to-end suite of AI-powered solutions to help organisations transform their HR processes.”

Mrs Yashmee Dewoo Issur, Human Resources Director – Accenture (Mauritius) Services Ltd:

“Accenture holds innovation at the heart of its business. Partnering with the HRDC to provide a Masters in AI represents the step ahead that we are taking in educating resources to study in a field of expertise and avant-garde. Our clients are always in search of the most up-to-date solutions and having experts in-house allows us to deliver at our best. The programme has been an eye opener for these students who will now bring their much valuable knowledge into the business.”

During the closing ceremony, the four outstanding students of the MSc AI course were awarded a shield in recognition of their achievement.

MSc AI student, Mr Noomesh Dowlut, employed at Constance Hospitality Management Ltd:

“This course has not only helped me to demystify the concept of AI but also demonstrated its practical applications in various areas within the group of hotels. The benefits of AI powered solutions have geared up the group’s analytics maturity and its acceptance of AI as an efficiency boosting technology. From the army of robots, assisting a major data migration project across all the hotels to the proposal of intelligent agents for a smart golf turf maintenance, I can relate to several processes which were galvanised by AI, but the highlight remains the precise AI predictions for hotel’s occupancy rate. Instead of relying solely on experts’ instinct or off the shelf generic software, using our own data, we were able to build an AI tool to forecast the occupancy of one of our hotels with a 90% accuracy and here, we have a game-changer.”

MSc AI student, Yashna Moosary, emploayed at Accenture (Mauritius) Services Ltd:

“This MSc AI course has been a great way to understand the new technological advancements enabled by AI and how it is constantly being improved. AI has indeed the power to disrupt and push the limits of humanity. By taking this course, I have gained a solid knowledge in the principles of AI, Machine Learning, Deep Learning and related fields. I have developed useful skills to put AI in good use at work and I aspire to bring positive change around me by using AI.”
